New Season, Same Old Niners?

I've always maintained a wait and see attitude ever since the Niner's first drafted Alex Smith. After all, he had a different head coach and offensive coordinator every season since he first came aboard. Also the fact that he did not have a marquee receiver to throw to, and his offensive line was more porous than a colander, I felt that he deserved a little slack for not single-handedly turning the franchise around.

Things are different this year. For one, the offensive line is solid. Two, he has a great down-field receiver and a great tight-end to throw to. And the running game is as reliable as ever. But Smith made too many mistakes yesterday. It's true that some of his incompletions and at least one interception was the fault of his receivers, but a couple of critical plays were missed because he was off target. Two passes in the end-zone ended up incomplete because he threw too wide or too high. There is no excuse for those passes being off. He had plenty of time to throw both.

This is the year that will determine Smith's fate. He will not have a job very long if he continues playing like this. And I will regret giving him the benefit of the doubt all this time.
